Pedro Martins

Scientific Director

Pedro S. Martins is Professor of Economics at Nova SBE. He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Warwick in 2004. Pedro is a labour economist, having published in several leading journals, including Journal of Labor Economics, American Economic Journal (…)

José Tavares

Vice-Scientific Director

José Tavares earned his doctorate in Economics at Harvard University, where he specialized in Political Economy and Macroeconomics, and is currently professor of economics at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London.

Francesco Franco

Executive Director

Francesco Franco has been teaching at Nova School of Business and Economics since 2004. He earned his PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include fluctuations and applied macroeconomics, topics on which he has published in Portuguese and international journals.

Diogo Silva

Deputy Executive Director

Diogo Silva is currently Deputy Executive Director of Economics for Policy at Nova SBE. He holds a MSc in International Development and Public Policy from the same institution. His research interests include Political Economy, European Economy and Public Policy.

João Amador

Nova Faculty Affiliate

João Amador is an Associate Professor (Adjunct) at Nova School of Business and Economics where he teaches Macroeconomic Policies and European Economy. He has also taught Microeconomics and Macroeconomics in other departments of Universidade Nova and in executive programs. He has completed his Ph.D. in Economics in 2000.

Pedro Brinca

Pedro Brinca currently holds a position as an Associate Professor at Nova SBE and teaches Macroeconomics in the BSc’s in Economics and Business Administration. He is primarily interested in macroeconomics, business cycle fluctuations and economic policy. (…)

João Brogueira de Sousa

João is a Junior Researcher in Economics at Nova School of Business and Economics. He holds a PhD in Economics from the European University Institute. His research focuses primarily on macroeconomics and fiscal policy.

Andre de Castro Silva

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Andre de Castro Silva is Associate Professor at Nova SBE. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago. His research is in macroeconomics and finance. Andre has papers on inflation, monetary policy, innovation, and related topics. He regularly presents his research in universities, central banks, and conferences.

João Duarte

João Duarte is an Assistant Professor at Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon. He received his PhD in Economics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before joining Nova SBE, João was a research associate at the University of Cambridge.

Luís Catela Nunes

Luís Catela Nunes is a Professor of Applied Econometrics at Nova School of Business and Economics, where he has served as President of the Pedagogical Council, Deputy Dean for Research, and Head of its Research Unit. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Ana Fontoura Gouveia

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Ana Fontoura Gouveia is an invited Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at Nova School of Business and Economics, currently responsible for the graduate course on Public Finance. As an economist interested in public policy and political economy, she works at the Research Department of Banco de Portugal, in the Structural Research and Public Finance Division.

Steffen Hoernig

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Steffen Hoernig is Professor of Economics at Nova School of Business & Economics, Lisbon, Portugal. He obtained a degree in Management at the Universität Bielefeld in Germany; a Master in Applied Mathematical Sciences at the University of Georgia, Athens, USA; and a PhD degree in Economics at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

Miguel Lebre Freitas

Miguel Lebre de Freitas holds a PhD in Economics from the University of London, in the United Kingdom.
His research focuses mainly on Open Economy Macroeconomics, and other areas of interest include the Portuguese Economy and Economic Growth.

Susana Peralta

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Susana Peralta holds a PhD in Economics from the Université Catholique de Louvain, in Belgium. Her research focuses on the economics of multi-layered governments, including tax competition and political economy issues.

Pedro Portugal

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Pedro Portugal studied economics at the Universidade do Porto and received his PhD at University of South Carolina; in 1991.
He is currently a senior researcher at the Bank of Portugal and invited professor of Economics at Nova School of Business and Economics. His main area of interest is applied labor economics, focusing on issues of microeconomics of unemployment; unemployment compensation; wage bargaining; job security; and worker displacement.

Paulo Rodrigues

Paulo M. M. Rodrigues is a senior research economist at the Economics and Research Department of the Bank of Portugal and Professor of Econometrics at Nova School of Business and Economics. His research interests include time-series econometrics, financial econometrics and empirical macroeconomics and finance.

Margarida Soares

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Margarida Soares is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Nova SBE. She earned her PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago. Her research interests lie in the intersection of Corporate Finance, Labor Economics with an emphasis on gender decisions and outcomes, and Innovation.

Nikita Melnikov

Nova Faculty Affiliate

Nikita Melnikov is an applied microeconomist who works on topics related to Political Economy, Development Economics, and Public Policy. Before joining Nova SBE, he received a PhD in Economics from Princeton University. Nikita Melnikov’s work has been published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Comparative Economics, and the American Economic Review: Papers and Proceedings.

Hugo de Almeida Vilares

Hugo is a Labour and Urban Economist and an Applied Microeconometrician, with work published in the British Journal of Industrial Relations and the Journal of Econometrics. He is an Assistant Professor at University of Porto and a Guest Teacher at Department of Management of LSE. He is affiliated at the Centre for Economic Performance (LSE), Economics for Policy Knowledge Center (Nova SBE) and CEMF.UP (U. Porto).

Alexander Coutts

External Faculty Affiliate

Alexander Coutts is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Schulich School of Business of York University since 2020. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from New York University, with specializations in development and experimental economics. During his studies he was a researcher at New York University’s Center for Technology and Economic Development, based in Abu Dhabi.

Joana Gonçalves de Sá

Joana Gonçalves de Sá is Coordinator Investigator at SPAC – Social Physics & Complexity Lab. Before that, she was an Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and Nova SBE and the leader of the Data Science and Policy research group.

Catarina Alvarez

Catarina Alvarez holds a PhD in Economics from Nova SBE. Previously, she was a predoctoral research fellow at the University of Barcelona and Institut d’Economia de Barcelona (IEB). She has been a Teaching Assistant and Grader for several courses at Nova SBE and at the University of Barcelona.

Margarida Araújo

Margarida is currently a research assistant at Nova SBE. She holds a MSc and an undergraduate degree in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics.

Tiago Bernardino

Tiago Bernardino is currently a PhD Candidate in Economics at the Institute for International Economic Studies (IIES) at Stockholm University. Previously, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at LSE and a Research Assistant at Nova SBE. He holds a MSc and a undergraduate degree in Economics from the same institution.

Marli Fernandes

Marli holds a PhD in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics. She obtained her Bachelor and Master in Economics from the same institution. Her research interests are focused on Political Economy and Economics of Migration.

Miguel Ferreira

Miguel holds a PhD in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics. He is a lecturer in the School of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary University since 2022. He previously worked as a Teaching Assistant at Nova and as a Junior Economist at the Portuguese Treasury and Debt Management Agency.

Marlon Francisco

Marlon Francisco is a PhD candidate and Teaching Assistant at Nova SBE, and an Economist (consultant) at the World Bank. Previously, he worked as an Economist for Fitch Ratings, the Portuguese Treasury and Debt Management Agency (IGCP), and the International Monetary Fund (African Department).

Inês Gonçalves Raposo

Inês is a PhD Candidate in Economics at Bocconi University, with research interests in macroeconomics and labour economics. Previously she worked as an Affiliate Fellow at Bruegel and at the Financial Stability Department of Banco de Portugal.

Jaime Marques Pereira

Affiliate

Jaime holds a PhD in Economics from Bocconi University. Currently, he is a lecturer in Economics and Data Science at the Department of Economics at Lancaster University Management School. His research interests are focused on Political Economy and Macroeconomics.

João Oliveira

João Oliveira is a Research Economist in the Monetary Analysis Directorate of the Bank of England. He holds a PhD in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics. He is interested in the effects of technological changes on the economic inequality of consumers and the macroeconomic effects of financial stability.

Bruno Pessoa Carvalho

Bruno Pessoa Carvalho holds a PhD in Economics from Nova SBE and a Research Master’s degree from the same institution. Bruno is currently a Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and he is an Associate Fellow at ECARES (SBS-EM, Université Libre de Bruxelles).

Sharmin Sazedj

Sharmin Sazedj is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Nova SBE, where she teaches Principles of Macroeconomics. She completed her PhD in Economics at Nova SBE in 2021. She is also a Senior Economist in the Economics and Research Department at Banco de Portugal, where her work focuses on public policy analysis and public finances.

Rúben Silva Branco

Rúben Silva Branco collaborates with Banco de Portugal as Adviser to the Governor. Before joining the Bank, he served as Chief of Cabinet of the Secretary of State to the Vice Prime Minister, Government of Portugal, working on economic policy and on the supervision of the Portuguese Economic and Financial Assistance Program with the European Commission, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank.

José Pedro Sousa

José Pedro is currently an Advisor to the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs. Previously, he was a Teaching and Research Assistant at Nova SBE and the Executive Manager of Economics for Policy. He holds a MSc in Economics from Nova SBE and an undergraduate degree in Economics from the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto.

Luís Teles Morais

Luís is a PhD candidate in Economics and Finance and teaching assistant at Nova SBE. Currently, he is visiting the Department of Finance of NYU Stern School of Business. His research interests are in macroeconomics, household finance and public finance. At Economics for Policy, he worked on a project about the impact of aging on public finances in Portugal. 

João Tovar Jalles

João Tovar Jalles, a Portuguese national, is a Senior Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Lisbon. Previously, he was a Senior Economist at the Portuguese Public Finance Council. Before that he spent 5 years at the IMF: 1 year in the Research Department and 4 years in the Fiscal Affairs Department, where he participated in negotiation and review missions to Senegal and Georgia.

Carlota Juzarte Aniceto

Carlota Juzarte Aniceto is currently pursuing a MSc in International Development and Public Policy at Nova SBE, having an academic background in Political Science and International Relations.

Constança Rego

Constança is currently pursuing a Master’s in International Development and Public Policy and she has an Undergraduate degree in Economics, both from Nova SBE. Her research interests are Economic Policy and International Development.
